Mary Jennings, our Camano Island Library Pilot Project Children's Liaison, reports on a recent school event:
Camano Island children’s author Carole Lexa Schaefer and Whidbey Island children’s author/illustrator Pierr Morgan presented a Young Authors Workshop to 60 fourth and fifth graders at Elger Bay Elementary on March 14. The program, which was facilitated by the Camano Island Library Pilot Project and funded by the Camano Island Library Friends, provided an overview of the collaborative process between an author and illustrator when creating a children’s picture book. Schaefer and Morgan, who have published over 40 books, demonstrated how an idea for a story is developed and then published into an actual book. They also described the importance of imagination and keeping a journal of thoughts about potential stories.

Additionally, the team discussed the need for perseverance and patience when working with book publishing companies. Schaefer and Morgan read several of their books including their latest "Who’s There", which will be published in June. The students were given the hands-on activity of creating a “dummy”—the folded paper that is a model for a picture book. Throughout the workshop, the children were encouraged to ask questions about the creative process. Schaefer and Morgan were delighted with the students’ level of interest in book publishing. Both felt sure that there were many future authors and illustrators in attendance. Schaefer’s and Morgan’s books are available at the Camano Island Library.
