Today the White House announced that, for the first time since the Roosevelt era, there would be an actual (organic) vegetable garden on the White House grounds. Here at the library, we've seen an increase in interest about vegetable gardening as a method of supplementing the family budget. I think it's one of those 'tipping point' moments, where a combination of economic hardship, concern about a healthy lifestyle, and the increasing reliance on fossil fuels to truck in produce results in a revitalized "home grown" approach to eating.

And of course, growing it yourself means no pesticides or genetic modification -- and gardening is a great form of exercise.

Stop by the library or search our catalog online -- we have lots of information to get you started.

this is great & green like so many things i love. our family will be moving to 5 acres here on Camano soon and will definitely use some of the wonderful instruction available from library books to grow some of our own food!
Another good book is "All New Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. Grow more in less space, water and time.
