First encounters

A few years ago, I read an article in "Fanfare" magazine (a classical music quarterly) about the power of 'first encounters'. The article talked about how powerful the link is between our first exposure to a great piece of music (or literature) and how it serves to act as a template for further explorations.
Many of my 'first encounters' were at my local library growing up. I first heard Debussy's piano music from a boxed set of LPs I checked out at the library (I now own that same performance on CD). Same with the complete "Nutcracker", same with Miles Davis. And I'm still having these first encounters almost every week at the Camano Island Library. I get to try something new, and it usually sparks a hunger for more exploration. Hmmm, "More to Explore" --- where have I heard that before?

Sunny disposition

As much as I enjoy the constant hazy drizzle of the Northwest, there are times when I like to focus on something warmer. These 2 CDs from the Sno-Isle collection (Music from the Wine Lands, Samba Bossa Nova) are great reminders that the sun is shining somewhere!
